Unbound Scholars

About

Turning school values into working systems.

Unbound Scholars helps school leaders build practical systems for progressive discipline, restorative response, documentation, data-informed leadership, and belonging-centered student support.

Founded by Sherwin Parker, Unbound Scholars is rooted in lived experience, real school leadership, equity-centered training, community partnership, and the belief that students deserve systems that recognize their dignity, protect their pathways, and support their growth.

This work begins with a simple conviction:

Students should not have to be perfectly understood to be protected, supported, challenged, and given access to meaningful pathways.

Founders Story

“Young People should not have to be perfectly understood to be protected, supported, challenged, and given access to meaningful pathways.”

Why This Work Matters

My educational journey was shaped by both formal and informal experiences.

As a young person, I attended ten schools from kindergarten through twelfth grade across the United States and Canada. On paper, I was capable. I tested in the top three percent. But in practice, I was often misread by the systems around me.

In the lower and middle grades, I experienced disproportionate discipline. I was suspended, sent out of class, and even spent time with a desk in the principal’s office. I knew what it felt like to be seen through a narrow lens before the fullness of who I was had a chance to be understood.

In high school, athletics became one of the places where my value was more easily recognized. As I competed at the state, provincial, and regional levels, and through formative experiences such as the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, the disciplinary action slowed down.

But the lesson stayed with me:

School systems often respond differently when they can clearly see a student’s value, talent, structure, or potential.

Weeks after graduation, my father passed away in a tragic drowning accident. With the support of my mother, stepfather, church family, and community, I began again through community college. During that season, a life-changing spiritual experience, mentorship, and encouragement from people who believed in me helped redirect my path.

That journey eventually led me into education.

I became an educator because I know what it means for a young person to be brilliant and still misunderstood, gifted and still disciplined, full of potential and still at risk of having pathways narrowed too early.

Unbound Scholars was born from that conviction.

The work is personal, but it is not only personal. It is also practical. Unbound Scholars exists to help schools build the systems, habits, and tools that keep students seen, supported, accountable, and connected to opportunity.

I’m Sherwin Parker, an assistant principal, school systems strategist, and founder of Unbound Scholars.

My work sits at the intersection of discipline, data, student support, instructional leadership, and belonging. I created Unbound Scholars to help school leaders move beyond disconnected initiatives and build the systems, habits, tools, and language that make school values visible in daily practice.

This work is personal, but it is also practical. It is shaped by lived experience, school leadership, restorative practice, equity-centered training, community partnership, and a deep belief that students deserve systems that keep pathways open.

What Unbound Scholars Exists to Do

Unbound Scholars helps school leaders examine the hidden systems that shape student outcomes.

The goal is not to make discipline soft.

The goal is to make discipline clearer, more consistent, more restorative, more documented, and more connected to student growth.

Unbound Scholars supports leaders who want to build schools where accountability and dignity can exist together reducing exclusion, restoring connection, and supporting student success.

My work through Unbound Scholars is shaped by both formal training and hands-on experience in student support, college access, youth development, discipline systems, restorative practice, and school-based intervention.

Across these experiences, I learned that schools are shaped by more than curriculum and classrooms. They are shaped by housing, opportunity, family communication, community resources, mental health supports, discipline systems, adult expectations, and the pathways students are allowed to keep open.

Leadership

Training, Partnerships &

Formation

Training and experiences connected to empathy, connection, student voice, community building, and the human stories students carry into school.

Challenge Day

Formerly known as The California Conference for Equality and Justice, this training shaped my understanding of restorative dialogue, community building, harm, conflict, equity, and justice-centered transformation.

Confluence Rising

California Academic Partnership Program

Experience connected to the California Academic Partnership Program, including the CAPP Leadership Network and the CAPP Equity Leadership Certification Program, strengthened my lens around equity, access, college readiness, institutional culture, and systems-level leadership.

Seneca Family of Agencies

Partnership experience during my time with Seneca helped shape my understanding of whole-child support, mental health, student belonging, intervention and deescalation systems, team and school training strategies, and school-community partnership.

California State University, Long Beach

Work as a college transfer advisor helped ground my understanding of access, transition, student voice, and the support students need to keep educational pathways open.

Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles

Early experience supporting youth activities connected to the Summer Youth Employment Program deepened my understanding of the relationship between school, housing, employment, community opportunity, and youth development.

Alliance College-Ready Public Schools

My work with Alliance helped develop my understanding of college readiness, scholar support, restorative practices, family partnership, school culture, and the systems students need in order to thrive.

School-Based Intervention & Special Education Support

Experience as an intervention specialist and special education instructional aide helped me understand student needs across different educational settings and reinforced the importance of systems that support access, belonging, and growth.

Together, these experiences shaped the belief at the center of Unbound Scholars:

Schools do not become more restorative, equitable, or student-centered because of values statements alone.

They become those things when adults build the systems, habits, language, routines, and supports that make those values visible in daily practice.

Practical Systems.

Areas of Focus

Real Impact.

Unbound Scholars helps school leaders build the systems, habits, and structures that protects dignity, ensure accountability, and create conditions where every student can grow.

From Referral

A Developing Guide & Toolkit

From Referral to Restoration is a developing guide and toolkit for assistant principals, deans, and school leaders who want to move beyond reactive referral processing and build clearer, more restorative discipline infrastructure.

The work focuses on practical tools for referral review, re-entry conversations, family communication, documentation, data reflection, and student support.

This is not about making discipline soft.

It is about helping schools build discipline systems that are clear, humane, documented, restorative, and centered on student growth.

Start wih the system.

If you are new to Unbound Scholars, start with the Referral to Restoration Readiness Check.

This short reflection tool is designed for assistant principals, deans, principals, and school leaders who are responsible for student discipline, documentation, re-entry, family communication, and student support.

It is not a compliance quiz.

It is a way to see where your discipline system is clear, where it depends too much on individual people, and where students, families, teachers, and administrators may need stronger infrastructure.

After completing the readiness check, educators receive an automated report and PDF insight summary to help them reflect on next steps.

You can also join the Unbound Scholars List to receive tools, reflections, and updates connected to From Referral to Restoration and future resources.
